Why Reddit Is Critical To Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

Transcript:

Hi everyone, I’m Chris Long from Nectiv, and for today’s GEO tip, I want to talk about why SEOs and marketers absolutely need to start paying attention to Reddit.

It’s one of the most pivotal platforms when it comes to both LLMs and traditional search.

Profound did a great study a while back where they found that Reddit was one of the most frequently cited domains by different AI models. It’s the most dominant source in Google’s AI Overviews at 21%. For ChatGPT, it’s the second most at 11%. So it’s getting cited a lot in LLMs as well.

When we look at our own data from our AI Tracker, we see similar trends.

Here, I’m looking at ChatGPT for Capterra/TrustRadius-style prompt sets. We see that Reddit is cited 21% of the time. If I switch to Google’s AI mode, it drops slightly to 6th position, cited 11% of the time.

So even in our own data, we’re seeing very similar trends.

We see Reddit getting cited a lot in AI Overviews. According to Ahrefs, Reddit appears in almost 7 million different AI Overviews. If you search for bottom-of-the-funnel decision terms like “best data recovery software,” you frequently see Reddit threads directly referenced in the AI Overview.

I’ve even seen examples where Google pulls from a very specific Reddit comment and includes it in the Overview.

So it’s not just critical for informing LLMs like ChatGPT, AI Mode, and AI Overviews — it’s also extremely popular in traditional search. Reddit’s growth trajectory has been incredible. It now gets over 950 million organic sessions daily according to Ahrefs.

So marketers: you need to be paying attention to Reddit.

Know your key subreddits. Know what’s being said about your brand. Monitor them. Have an outreach strategy.

Because Reddit is becoming more and more influential in both traditional SEO and GEO.
